Taking care of business

You take care of others -now take care of yourself

Being a care and support worker is rewarding but without regular self-care, you could burn out. Self-care is any activity that assists in maintaining your physical, mental or emotional health and wellbeing. It’s a personal matter and everyone’s approach will be different.

There are online tools available to assess your level of self-care as well as self-care plan templates to assist with managing your self-care.

If at any time your personal strategies are not working and you need additional support, the following services are there to help:

If life is in danger call 000 (triple zero) immediately for assistance

  • Lifeline– Ph: 13 11 14 (available 24 hours)
  • Men’s Helpline – Ph: 1300 78 99 78 (available 24 hours)
  • Beyond Blue – 1300 22 46 36 (available 24 hours, by phone and online chat)

Meet other workers on the Better Caring platform

You’re an independent worker on the platform but that doesn’t mean you have to fly solo. Better Caring Community of Care Workers meetups are hosted in various locations across Australia. These meetups are a great way to connect with your peers on the platform. You can also look for a buddy to cover your client shifts if something unexpected comes up.

Check the Better Caring website or phone the office on 1300 736 573 to find out about your local meetups. If there are no meetups currently available in your region, enquire about how to start a Community of Care Workers meetup to build your local support network. We can give you some tools and tips to get this off the ground.
