If you’re an independent support worker, you have the ability to choose and advertise your own hourly rates. Most businesses with casual and part-time employees have public holiday rates, but because Better Caring is not an employer, and you’re working for yourself via the platform, choosing to set a ‘public holiday rate’ is a decision you need to make.

How to set a public holiday rate with your client

If a client contacts you requesting your support services on a public holiday, it’s important that you and your client agree on an hourly rate. This agreement process can be as easy as contacting your client via the platform and creating a new agreement which will include the mutually agreed rate for the public holiday date only. Remember – it’s important to have the conversation with your client about setting a revised rate prior to working the shift – and a new agreement must be created and accepted before you work together.

Tips on setting a public holiday rate

Because you’re an independent worker, you have the autonomy to set your own rates. However, there are some simple, effective tips you can consider when setting a public holiday rate with your client. When setting any rate on Better Caring, we encourage workers to consider their skills, experience and the quality of the services they provide. If you are, for example, a Registered Nurse, health specialist or Allied Health professional, you may want to consider charging higher rates than workers who have less experience – this is entirely up to you.

The average worker on Better Caring charges about $35 an hour, so you may want to use this amount as a guide to setting a public holiday rate. It also may be useful to look at your current weekday rate and increase it by a percentage.

Talk to other support workers

It’s always good to ask for advice if you’re unsure – especially those that have the same job as you. You can post a question in our growing Community of Support Workers’ Group if you are an approved worker. Or, if you know support workers in your area, have a chat with them and see what they think about public holiday rates.

Don’t be afraid to ask

Remember, if you’d like to set a public holiday rate, just ask your client if they’re happy to agree to the rate. There’s a good chance your client has had to pay public holiday rates to support workers in the past, so it doesn’t hurt to ask.
