Why we’re introducing mandatory ABNs
From 31 July this year, all independent workers on Better Caring will need to have an ABN to continue operating on the platform.
Having an ABN is a key component of working for yourself. As our community continues to grow, we want to make sure that all of our workers are not only safeguarded, but have the greatest opportunity to find as much work as they’d like.
Access more work through the platform
Having an ABN opens up your options to work with a greater range of clients. For example, any client who uses aged care or NDIS government funding to pay for their services will only be able to engage a worker who has an ABN. Ensuring you’ve got one will help you grow your business.
Ensure you put your best foot forward
Operating on the Better Caring platform means you’re working for yourself. Even if you’re only working a few hours a week, you’re building your own business. Clients have told us that they feel safeguarded when they’re engaging someone who has an ABN.
It’s making things simpler
As an independent contractor, if you are making a profit, you are required to have an ABN for tax purposes. To ensure all workers on our platform are operating as they should be, we’re making ABNs a mandatory step in signing up.
How to apply for your ABN in 5 minutes!
Revisit your Better Caring profile
Log in to Better Caring and select ‘Edit your profile.’ Visit Step 9, Bank Account Details, and scroll down to the ABN field.
Click through to our quick submit form
Click the button ‘Apply for an ABN now’ and follow the prompts
Add your ABN to your profile
Once you’ve finished the process, the team at Airtax will email your ABN (usually in 3-5 days). Revisit Step 9 ‘Bank Account Details’, enter your ABN into the field and click ‘validate’.
Validate your ABN
Once you’ve entered your ABN, click ‘verify’. If your ABN cannot be validated, check there are no spaces between the numbers and that the name on your profile exactly matches the one on your ABN.

You can also apply directly for a sole trader ABN through the Australian Business Register website.
What else do I need for tax time?
Remember, as an independent contractor, you will need to lodge your tax return by the deadline of 31 October. What will I get from Better Caring to help me with my tax return?
Because you are not an employee of Better Caring, you will not get a group certificate at the end of the year like you would if you were employed. Instead, we will provide you with a statements of the money you have earned via the platform from 1 July 2017 to 30 June 2018.
If you’d like, you can also access information about your earnings, and export them from the platform yourself. To do this, you must have excel on your computer.
Step 1: Log in to your Better Caring account.
Step 2: Click on ‘Billing’ in the left hand menu
Step 3: Choose the ‘Exports’ tab
Step 4: Click on the ‘Timesheet Sessions’ button and, when prompted, click OK
